The API Version Sunset Planner

Build an API retirement planning tool that helps platform teams evaluate the consequences of deprecating an older API version and moving consumers to a supported replacement.

Allow users to define API versions, endpoint changes, known consumers, usage logs, migration requirements, and retirement deadlines.

Create:

  • A version compatibility matrix.

  • A consumer-to-endpoint dependency map.

  • A detector for breaking changes between supplied API specifications.

  • A migration checklist for each known consumer.

  • A timeline showing deprecation notices, migration milestones, and retirement gates.

  • A risk register for consumers with unknown ownership or incomplete usage data.

  • A simulation of retirement readiness under different migration completion assumptions.

  • A communication pack containing technical migration notes and example code changes.

Do not claim to know every API consumer when telemetry is incomplete. Clearly distinguish observed usage from declared dependencies, and flag unknown consumers as unresolved risks. Generate migration examples only when source and target specifications provide enough information. Include a fictional multi-version API and a testable readiness model.
