The Spreadsheet Decision Audit Trail

Build an advanced spreadsheet companion that records not just what a spreadsheet calculates, but why important decisions were made using its numbers.

Allow users to import CSV files or enter spreadsheet assumptions manually. Let them attach a decision, the relevant input values, the expected outcome, the confidence level, and the date to each decision snapshot.

Include:

  • Versioned snapshots of key assumptions and calculated outputs.

  • A decision journal linked to specific inputs and results.

  • A comparison engine that shows which changed assumptions explain the largest output differences.

  • Forecast-versus-actual tracking.

  • An audit timeline showing how conclusions evolved.

  • Alerts when a new decision relies on stale or unverified assumptions.

  • Export to CSV and a printable decision report.

Never pretend to read spreadsheet formulas or workbook history when only CSV values are available. Label unavailable information clearly. Use a realistic example involving a small business deciding prices, inventory levels, and monthly spending. Build a clean interface with interactive tables, filters, and drill-down explanations.
