The Visual Regression Root-Cause Explorer

Build an interactive visual regression analysis tool that compares screenshots from two versions of a website and helps developers isolate meaningful interface changes.

Allow users to upload baseline and current screenshots, identify viewport dimensions, and optionally provide route names, component boundaries, or change descriptions.

Create:

  • A synchronized side-by-side comparison viewer.

  • An opacity overlay and pixel-difference heatmap.

  • Configurable ignore regions for dynamic timestamps, advertisements, and other expected changes.

  • A region-based difference summary.

  • A detector for likely layout shifts, missing elements, changed text regions, and altered spacing.

  • A review queue for approving or rejecting detected differences.

  • A baseline version history.

  • An exportable regression report with annotated screenshots.

Clearly distinguish pixel differences from inferred causes. Do not claim to identify the exact source-code change from screenshots alone. Support deterministic image comparisons, preserve original screenshots, and include synthetic examples of intentional redesigns and accidental layout regressions.
