The API Data Contract Drift Observatory

Build a developer tool that detects when real API responses gradually diverge from their documented data contracts.

Users can upload OpenAPI specifications, JSON Schema definitions, and sanitized historical request or response samples.

The application should:

  • Compare observed payload structures against the documented contract.

  • Detect missing fields, unexpected fields, changed types, nullability changes, enum expansion, and format inconsistencies.

  • Distinguish potentially breaking changes from harmless additions according to configurable consumer requirements.

  • Group recurring violations by endpoint, field, version, and observation period.

  • Identify undocumented response variants and inconsistent error payloads.

  • Generate reproducible contract test cases from observed violations.

  • Compare multiple API versions and produce a compatibility report.

  • Export findings as JSON, Markdown, or test fixtures.

Include a schema diff viewer, payload inspector, violation timeline, and endpoint-level risk summary.

Never treat a small sample as proof that a field is always present or always absent. Redact sensitive payload values, preserve structural evidence, and explain the rules behind each compatibility classification. Keep generated tests separate from production execution and require review before integrating them into a build pipeline.
