The Excel Business Metric Definition Registry

Build an interactive metric registry that prevents different teams from calculating the same business KPI in inconsistent ways.

Users can import spreadsheets, enter metric definitions, and document the data sources and calculation rules behind each number.

For every metric, store its name, business meaning, formula, unit, reporting frequency, owner, source fields, exclusions, and effective date.

Implement:

  • A searchable dictionary of business metrics.

  • Detection of similar metric names with different definitions.

  • Comparison of formulas used across uploaded workbooks.

  • Identification of differences in date ranges, filters, denominators, rounding, and excluded records.

  • Version history for definitions and effective dates.

  • Example calculations using sample records.

  • A dependency map showing which reports and dashboards use each metric.

  • Exportable metric definitions in CSV and JSON.

Include a review workflow for proposing, approving, and retiring definitions.

Never assume that identical metric names imply identical meanings. Distinguish mathematically equivalent formulas from formulas that only look similar, and flag missing business rules for human review. Preserve the original workbook data and explain every detected inconsistency.
